COBRA is a law that requires organizations with 20 or more employees to offer the continuation of group health benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision and Medical Reimbursement Account) to employees (and covered dependents) upon experiencing a “qualifying event.”

Employee Assistance Program

Employee Assistance Programs provide employees with beneficial access to confidential, professional assistance while helping them remain productive at work. These programs are designed to help employees overcome problems that adversely impact their work performance and well-being.

Survey finds EAP’s clearly improves employee health and productivity. Often the largest area of financial savings associated with EAP use comes from improved employee productivity and reduced work absence. Examples of employee work performance outcomes after EAP use include:

  • 57% of cases had improvement in ability to work productively after the use of the EAP. Attridge, M. (2003, March). EAP impact on work, stress and health: national data 1999-2002.  
  • 50% of cases had improved absence and/or productivity at work. Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health, 22 (1), 1.

  • 64% of cases with work issues as primary problem had improvement after EAP use; and 46% of all types of cases had improved work productivity. Amaral, T.M.  (2008, April). Global benchmarking and EAP best practices.

Flexible Benefit Plans

Flexible Benefit Plans also known as Cafeteria Plans or Section 125 Plans allow eligible employees to pay for certain health care and dependent care expenses with tax-free dollars. This helps you save money on taxes for insurance premiums, out-of-pocket health care, and/or related child or dependent care expenses. Any dollar deferred into a Flexible Spending Plan is withheld before any taxes are deducted. Federal, State, local taxes, including Social Security and Medicare taxes are potentially saved on every dollar contributed to the plan.
